A day in the Life of Situ
John Haworth
Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

The installation exhibit is an innovative modern version of a Chinese scroll print. It depicts a day in the life of a particular individual. It shows what the person has been doing during the day, including the spontaneous, enjoyable, challenging, interesting, social, mundane and intangible; and how the person is feeling through the colour coding of answers to questions on subjective well-being. To get the information to produce the print on a computer the person carries a mobile phone-camera which is programmed to give an alarm signal 8 times a day between the hours of 9.30 am and 9.30 pm. At the signal, the time of which is not previously known to the person, a photo is taken of the activity being undertaken, and the six questions on well-being answered on a card or the phone. The installation summarises the method in-situ and provides a web-link www.creativity-embodiedmind.com to a downloadable paper ‘The Way We are Now’ which will enable the viewer to undertake the project. Participation in the project can enhance self-realisation and stimulate creativity. A website and an exhibition could portray ‘A day in the life of---‘ individuals from around the world, constituting a science-art project giving creative insights into the human condition
