Social Approaches to Consciousness 2009
Hong Kong, China, June 9, 2009
The social revolution in the brain and behavioral sciences presents major challenges to western individualistic and physicalistic world-views. Collaborations between brain and social scientists are already transforming our understanding of consciousness. Our brains model our own minds, other people’s minds, and the world around us, in the same way – revealing that our commonsense distinction between “subjective” and “objective” experience is a delusion created by the brain. Social anthropologists are arguing that many of our beliefs and assumptions are political constructs, and there is now good evidence that all the contents of consciousness are social constructs. Many believe that consciousness itself is a social phenomenon.
Science and philosophy are cooperative cultural projects: which means that all academic inquiry – including all approaches to consciousness – are social. Social and cultural analyses are needed to clarify what is going on in consciousness studies; to establish universals of human thought, behavior, and experience; and to expose the collective deceptions that get in the way of rational investigation.
The Social Approaches to Consciousness Conference brings together leading scientists, scholars, anthropologists, artists, and educators interested in investigating consciousness. Speakers include Marilyn Schlitz, Imants Barušs, Etzel Cardeña, Joan Chiao, Charles Whitehead, and a dozen others. The topics covered range from the social brain and social self – through art, creativity, and robotics – to anthropology and the relationship between consciousness and reality.
Scientists, scholars, artists, and all those interested in consciousness are invited to register for this one-day conference.
